Singer/guitarist John Rzeznik and bassist Robby Takac released their new album ‘Boxes’ last week. Featuring the current single ‘So Alive’, the group’s 11th studio album features collaborations with several songwriters and producers, including Gregg Wattenberg and Derek Fuhrmann, who helped Rzeznik push himself out of his comfort zone.
“When it came time to make ‘Boxes’, I really tried to give up my preconceived notions of what the hell was expected of me,” says the man responsible for writing the late ‘90s hits ‘Slide’ and ‘Iris’.
“I was impeding my own growth by not opening myself up to collaboration before. But when you allow other people’s ideas in and you share willingly, everything grows exponentially. None of these songs would have existed if I had maintained a defensive stance.”
Formed in Buffalo, New York in 1986, the band spent 10 years touring North America in a van before the song ‘Name’ resulted in mainstream success. Now, after 30 years together, Rzeznik and Takac have sold more than 12 million albums, scored 14 Top 10 radio hits, and received 4 Grammy nominations.
