After a string of successful shows last year, Kikayaku Moyo are heading back to London armed with a new EP.
The Tokyo band play MOTH Club on 20 June in support of ‘Stone Garden’, which will be released on vinyl and digital on 21 April.
The follow-up to 2016’s ‘House In The Tall Grass’ LP is being previewed by the sitar-led track ‘In A Coil’.
The band – vocalist/guitarist Tomo Katsurada, guitarist Daoud Popal, sitar player Ryu Kurosawa, bassist Kotsuguy, and drummer/vocalist Go Kurosawa – began working on the new songs in a Prague basement studio. Influenced by the epic jam sessions of psychedelic pioneers, the quintet recorded nearly continuously over several days and nights.
The five resulting freeform songs were later refined over several months back in Tokyo and, in their final form, showcase the band’s more experimental side in terms of instrumentation, atonality, and mixing.
With influences as diverse as ‘70s rock, classical Indian music, folk, and krautrock, Kikagaku Moyo (“geometric patterns”) began in 2012 as a free music collective busking on Tokyo’s streets. Quickly evolving into a group of multi-instrumentalists, they have since released one EP and three full-length albums.
