Shriekback – the band originally formed in 1981 by Gang of Four bassist Dave Allen and ex-XTC keyboard player Barry Andrews – are making their return to the stage after two decades.
In their time away from live performance, the ever-evolving band have produced a series of studio albums, material from which will be brought to life when the group perform at Shepherd’s Bush Empire on 3 June.
Joined by guitarist Carl Marsh from Out On Blue Six, the band released their debut album, ‘Care’ in 1982, followed three years later by their best-known LP, ‘Oil & Gold’. Marsh left shortly after its release; Allen departed after its follow-up, ‘Big Night Music’.
Andrews kept the name alive, with various lineups releasing five more studio albums between 1988 and 2007, before Marsh returned to the fold, contributing two tracks to 2015’s ‘Life In The Loading Bay’. Original drummer Martyn Barker returned on the following year’s ‘Without Real String Or Fish’ LP, with the reunion’s success prompting their return to live performance.
With Allen unavailable, Andrews, Marsh, and Barker have recruited P.i.L bassist Scott Firth, and former stage collaborators Steve Halliwell (guitar/keyboards), Mike Cozzi (guitar), and Wendy and Sarah Partridge (backing vocals) for the upcoming shows.
