Chad VanGaalen is headed to London following the September release of his new album, ‘Light Information’.
The visual artist, animator, director, and producer plays Oslo on 17 October.
Ahead of the LP’s release, he’s shared the video he created for ‘Pine and Clover’ using hand-drawn cell animation, claymation, and paperless 2D animation.
“The style and economy of the animation is governed by my ability to sit in a chair and draw for as long as I possibly can without being distracted by my beautiful vegetable garden. Because of the garden and its beauty, I have been inspired to make most of the environments similar to what I see in the garden, so needless to say there is a lot of lettuce,” he explains.
As with every other track on the album, VanGaalen wrote, played, and produced all of the music in his Calgary garage studio.
An album that’s about “not feeling comfortable with really anything”, ‘Light Information’ finds VanGaalen drawing inspiration from his children facing the world.
“Being a parent has given me a sort of alternate perspective, worrying about exposure to a new type of consciousness that’s happening through the internet,” he says. “I didn’t have that growing up, and I’m maybe trying to preserve a little bit of that selfishly for my kids.”
He’s also trying to make the most of his time.
“I’m just trying to get over the weight of feeling like I have to be making something of my time constantly,” he says. “Especially with kids, you get these small breaks where you get to make stuff, and now I try to say: ‘You know what, I’m going to make something for me.’”
