To coincide with the release of their new album, Triggerfinger have announced a six-date UK tour that culminates in a show at The 100 Club on 10 October.
They’ve also launched an animated video for the LP’s title track, ‘Colossus’. The song, which showcases the Belgian trio’s now more expansive sound, marks the first time the band worked with two basses.

Erja Lyytinen is a phenomenal guitarist. That’s a given. Not just technically brilliant – capable of playing with speed and precision, able to imbue every solo with unique character and tone – she has an edge over many other virtuosos: the ability to cram so much tangible emotion into six strings.
So when she delivers the cascading, intensifying instrumental break of the magnificent ‘Black Ocean’, it’s as if she’s actually reliving the same dark feelings that went into lyrics like “I need some peace/ Please hear my call”. The jaw-dropping how-did-she-do-that slide solo of swampy Koko Taylor reimagination ‘I’m A Woman’ brims with a lifetime’s worth of admiration for the pioneering singer. And the high-energy performances that propel the nimble ‘Stolen Hearts’ and body-shakin’ ‘Rocking Chair’ overflow with an unbridled happiness.

How do you judge a gig’s success?
If it’s by how much the singer sweats, Dan Reed Network’s London performance is unparalleled. Within 10 minutes of announcing that they’ll be “starting slow”, Reed is drenched, having jumped, air drummed, pounced, and powerfully sung his way through supercharged renditions of ‘Get To You’ and ‘Divided’. And, even as the almost-two-hour show progresses, the energy levels rarely drop, with the frontman pinballing between four other musicians on an already narrow stage.

There’s no light show, no smoke machine, no video screens. It’s just five men – most on the other side of 50 – having as much fun as the audience. When the feet-on-fire frontman’s not pointing into the crowd, he’s air drumming or curling his fingers as if they’re tiger claws. The bassist, at various points, wears his bandana as a bandit mask, devises a dance routine to untangle his lead, and delivers punchlines with all the skill of a veteran stand-up. And the dreadlocked guitarist has the perpetual smile of a man on a tropical island rather than in a dark London basement club.

Performing most of your new album takes balls – especially if said album isn’t even out yet. But Albany Down, whose 10-song set features eight tracks from the forthcoming ‘The Outer Reach’, pull it off.
That’s due to the band members – Paul Muir is an engaging frontman, guitarist Paul Turley plays effortlessly, drummer Donna Peters and bassist Billy Dedman are a no-nonsense rhythm section – and the actual songs.

Albany Down are bringing their forthcoming third album, ‘The Outer Reach’, to 100 Club on 31 May as part of a nation-wide tour.
“The new album represents how far the band has come in terms of our song writing and live performances,” says lead singer Paul Muir. “Evolution happens slowly and you don’t always notice, then one day you look back and realise you’ve gone from swinging in trees to flying spaceships!”
